Good morning!…I hope? I know. Mornings can be so rough. For the first year or so when I started my job I had almost a 2 hour commute every morning. It was hell. It also meant that I would basically wake up, throw myself in the shower, get dressed and run out the door. My morning routine consisted of eating breakfast and doing my makeup on the train every morning. Talk about hectic!!
When we moved into the city and closer to my job, I was THRILLED. Not only could I sleep longer, but I could also walk to work everyday which was awesome. Instead of taking advantage of the extra time to do things like…I don’t know…eat breakfast at home? I slept longer (which was the best!) but I still fell back into the hectic morning routine with just enough time to pull it together, get out the house and more or less power walk to work to make it on time.
Finally, I decided that wasn’t how I wanted to start my morning so lately I’ve been trying to change up my morning routine. I can’t lie. It was a slow process to change. Every week I would move my alarm clock back about 10 minutes until I finally got to a better AM wake up time that would allow me to have actual time every day. I previously was waking up at 6am, but recently just made another change to incorporate time to add in a morning workout. Now, I wake up a full 2 hours before I have to leave for work..and I leave for work at 7:40am. Yup, 5:40am. MORNING!
I’ve been trying to be better at getting up as soon as my alarm goes off. Firstly, so that I don’t wake up my fiance, but secondly so that I actually get in my morning routine! When I wake up I try to just keep my eyes open…really though! Open your eyes, turn off the alarm, and put your foot on the floor. Once you commit to getting up and out of bed, you’ll be able to GO! Once I’m successfully out of the bed, I make my way to the bathroom, wash my face and put on my face oil (still obsessed).
Next, I’ll head to the kitchen and brew some hot water. Most mornings I typically will have tea with breakfast so I’ll start the day with some warm water with lemon first. I’ll flip on the news, check my email, check social media and get ready for my workout. Typically, I aim for a 30 minute workout in the morning, but if I’m short on time or if its a true rest day I’ll incorporate a 15 minute yoga sequence or a few deep stretches. Even the stretches are great for getting blood flowing in the morning. After the workout I hop in the shower while my tea brews.
Typically, I keep one breakfast idea for the week and it needs to fit these two requirements: must be ready in 5 minutes or less and must be delicious enough that I won’t get sick of it throughout the week! By the time my workout and shower are set, I’ll typically start breakfast at 6:45 or so. This gives me plenty of time to eat breakfast and drink my tea. Before my fiance gets up I aim to catch up on blog stuff. Some days I’ll work on a post in the morning, catch up with emails or comments or plan upcoming photos. I try to get a good chunk done every morning so that each night isn’t totally bogged down with computer stuff. When my fiance gets up, I’ll catch up with him for a few minutes before its time to get the rest of my stuff ready for the day and head out the door!
Whew! Hope you liked that in depth look into my morning routine. Whoop! Sorry for all that detail 😉 But, all in all I think perfecting my morning routine has taught me a few things. First, the better you prepare, the more you’ll get done and second, starting your day with a clear picture of what you want from the day will lead to a more productive day!
