Tidy Up!: Clean Up Routines

Okay, okay. I know this is kind of lame. Cleaning? Boo. No fun, but then again…its a fact of life. Lately, I’ve been trying out a new cleaning schedule to try to balance out the amount of time I spend doing chores, like cleaning, grocery shopping…you know? Boring adult stuff. I originally made this huge daily to do/cleaning list and realized very quickly that not only were things not going to get done, but that it was also just a silly thing to get worried about fitting into my already busy schedule.

Recently, I revamped my cleaning schedule into 3 lists…a daily quick clean up, a weekly cleaning schedule and a list of longer monthly projects. Granted, our house is not huge, but considering my daily routine definitely doesn’t lend to a daily 2 hour cleaning project I’m totally in love with all 1,000 sq feet of our house 😉 So here it goes, how I keep our house tidy!

weekly cleaning projects | keep it real clean

Each day I have a 10-15 minute cleaning project that I typically do at the end of the day, after dinner, but before bed. I like to be realistic that by the time I get home, workout, cook dinner, and eat dinner I have just about an hour or so before we jump into bed. By picking a smaller project Monday through Thursday and adding lengthy projects on the weekends, I still get everything done, but don’t feel like I spend my days off cleaning. Fridays are a little bit of a longer project as I also typically grocery shop, but I didn’t add it on to my weekly chore chart since I actually really enjoy grocery shopping, especially when I can hit up the farmer’s market in the warmer months!

In order to keep up with the weekly list, I have to do a few smaller projects everyday. I swear this really is only a 15 minute clean up each day and I typically do these in the morning after my shower, while the coffee is brewing. I’ll flip on the news and while I still have the morning calm and the stress of the day hasn’t started I’ll wipe down the counters, maybe load a few items into the dishwasher, or empty it if it didn’t happen the night before. If there’s any clutter hanging around…junk mail piling up, shoes hanging around…I’ll put them into their “spot” or by the bedroom door if my fiance is still sleeping. Once my fiance is awake, like literally..the bed is still warm…I’ll make the bed. The whole process only takes about 15 minutes, but really makes me just feel more organized and ready for the day ahead.

Monthly cleaning projects | keep it real cleanEach Sunday, I spend 20-45 minutes working on a more lengthy, monthly project. Considering our house isn’t huge and it’s just the two of us, I don’t think I need to do much more than this. Also, I have to mention how fortunate I am that my fiance does all of our laundry. I know, I can never complain again. I think its probably because he figured out I never sorted anything or pulled anything out of the dryer…despite tag directions. Whoops! But, we basically have the unspoken agreement that I do these projects and he does the laundry and the trash…two things I hate to do!

So there it is the boring adult stuff  my daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning routines. What do you think? Anything I’m totally missing? (biggest fear in writing this post) How do you keep up with your cleaning routines at home? I’m planning to do another post soon about my homemade washing solutions and more earth friendly options. Please let me know if that’s something you’d be interested in hearing more about!

Wow, you are very organized about your cleaning! I need to get better at doing a few things a day instead of all one a couple of days.
